Sulphur Spring

Location

Sulphur Spring is located in the Rock Springs Run State Reserve, about 1 mile northwest of Rock Springs and 6 miles north of Apopka. From the intersection of State Road 435 and Kelley Park Drive (about 5.5 miles north of Apopka), drive east on Kelley Park Drive for 0.7 mile, then turn north (left) on Baptist Camp Road and go 0.9 mile. Turn west (left) on Springwood Lane for 0.3 mile, and the spring is located about 800 feet towards the north.

Description

Sulphur Spring is a fourth-magnitude spring, formerly known as Camp Spring. A large sand boil about 5 feet wide discharges into an oval-shaped spring pool about 70 feet long and 15 feet wide. The bottom of the pool is covered with organic debris, except at the spring boil. The water is clean and clear, with a strong sulfur odor. The spring run flows east about 0.5 mile to Rock Springs Run.

Discharge at Sulphur Spring was measured by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1995 and 1997. St. Johns River Water Management District measured discharge twice in 2003, before and after mitigation work at the spring. The mean and median discharges for the period are 0.74 cfs and 0.79 cubic feet per second, respectively (see the table below).
