Florida Water StarSM
Florida Water StarSM is a water conservation certification program for new and existing homes and commercial developments. Program standards and guidelines for water efficiency are included for household appliances, plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems and landscapes.
If you want to apply for certification or just want to update your home or business, following program guidelines make it easy for anyone to save water resources. The program outlines standards for a broad range of homes — from a condominium with no yard to an older home on a half-acre lot with an aging irrigation system — and commercial properties and community developments.
For builders, Florida Water StarSM can be effectively integrated into projects with other programs such as ENERGY STAR®, the Florida Green Building Coalition’s green standards, and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program. Florida Water StarSM can enhance the effectiveness of other green certification programs because it is more detailed and relevant to Florida’s unique conditions.
What’s new?
The St. Johns River Water Management District has developed a professional accreditation program for landscape and irrigation professionals to provide in-depth, working knowledge of water conserving practices and the Florida Water StarSM program. The program trains and tests landscape and irrigation professionals on design and installation of water-efficient landscapes.
The professional training includes an eight-hour class with four hours devoted to each subject area. While the class is not mandatory to seek accreditation, it is highly recommended.
The District has partnered with the Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) to administer the training and testing program. Candidates who successfully pass the exam will receive an accreditation certificate and be listed as an accredited professional (AP) on the websites of the District and FNGLA. The APs may sign a licensing agreement to use the accreditation logo for their business. There will be a continuing education unit (CEU) requirement to remain in good standing as an AP.
